Conclusion:
As is expected, hindsight alone can reveal aspects of great significance that were perhaps overlooked during the planning (scheming) process. The Curious Subject readily admits that the Doctor was given far too little credit and the Couch-Dweller was given far too much during the consideration of this particular variable. Petty and true narcissism clouded the initial prediction of events, and thus a single (quite weighty) facet of this experiment was blithely ignored.
The Doctor is an observer as well, and is much more talented, honed, tactful and objective than the Couch-Dweller, regardless of how vivid their curiosity may be.
If a guess were to be made, it would be the following: there is an excellent chance that the Doctor suspected or knew what was occurring prior to the formal introduction of the variable. Regardless of what conclusions or speculations the Doctor may have drawn, the fact remains that the knowledge was kept silent, providing a prematurely insightful perspective.
All in all, the experiment occurred, and both observers (the trained and poised Doctor, as well as the clumsily enthusiastic Couch-Dweller) acquired previously unknown information about the other, allowing for a slightly more fluent and thorough observation.
